Argentina striker Carlos Tevez undergoing rigorous World Cup training regime

Argentina striker Carlos Tevez has hired a personal trainer and nutritionist in a bid to be in optimum shape for the World Cup.

The Manchester City star, known for his physical approach, has gone on a diet to slim down for the tournament in South Africa.

Tevez said: “I want to enjoy this World Cup as you don’t play in one every day.

“I hired a nutritionist because one of my biggest problems is my weight – as I usually don’t care so much about that.

“But I have to be professional and this is a World Cup – you have to be responsible.

“I also hired a personal trainer.

“I have eaten a lot of fruit and vegetables since working with the nutritionist. Let’s see if all the suffering will be worth it or not.”

Despite undergoing the rigorous regime, Tevez admits he does not expect to be in coach Diego Maradona’s starting XI for the World Cup opener.

“I had my chances but I didn’t take them. So now I have to fight hard and that’s the way it’s supposed to be,” he confessed.

“I want to play in the first game against Nigeria but (Lionel) Messi and (Gonzalo) Higuain are in great form.

“We have the greatest forwards in the world but we have to show that in the World Cup.”

Messi is 7/4 favourite with StanJames and Ladbrokes to finish as Argentina’s top scorer, with Higuain 7/2 (totesport, Ladbrokes) and Tevez 8/1 (Blue Square, 888Sport).
