The South Americans were eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday when they crashed 4-0 against Germany.

Maradona has not spoken about his future in the position since he returned to Argentina last Sunday.

However, Grondona said: “Maradona is the only person in the country who can do whatever he wants. He still has a contract with us, so it’s up to him.”

His first assistant Alejandro Mancuso said: “Knowing Diego as I do, I don’t think he will step down. We can’t throw out all the good things we’ve done up to now. We’ve grown up a lot as a group.

“We know the players and how each of them reacts to a negative situation. If he decides to stay, we have to start working right away.”
