Captain Steven Gerrard believes Wayne Rooney must get back on the goal trail if England are to be successful at the World Cup.

Rooney has scored just once in his last eight outings ahead of tonight’s crucial Group C clash with Algeria (19.30 BST, live on ITV1 and ITV.com).

Gerrard said: “Wayne needs a goal, of course. I said all the way through qualifying that, if we got to the World Cup, we’d need Wayne to be our top goalscorer.

“We need him to score the goals to take us to the later stages of the tournament because he’s our main player.”

Gerrard will play just behind Rooney this evening now that Gareth Barry is back in the team following an ankle injury.

And the Liverpool man is relishing being back in the role which was so successful during England’s qualifying campaign.

“I think the plan is for me to get closer to Wayne and we’ve had a fantastic understanding in qualification,” he continued.

“I like playing with good players – and I enjoy playing with Wayne. I’ll certainly be looking to link up well with him. Hopefully I can provide a goal for him to get off the mark.”

Coral are offering 10/3 on Wayne Rooney opening the scoring, while BetFred will refund all losing bets on the game if England manage to score four or more goals.
