England defender John Terry plays down Ledley King concerns

World Cup Staff - 8 Jun 2010

John Terry insists Ledley King’s absence from training will not hinder the pair if they are England coach Fabio Capello’s first-choice centre-backs.

King is the bookmakers’ favourite to line up alongside Terry following the injury to Rio Ferdinand.

The Tottenham captain continues to manage a knee problem that prevents him from taking part in every training session, but Terry claims that will not stop the pair developing an understanding.

He told Sky Sports News: “We’ve got a good understanding. I think everyone knows we used to lay together at (London-based amateur side ) Senrab may years ago.

“The understanding is there and always has been. We’ve worked a few times in training as well so we understand each other’s games and each other really well.

“He still does a lot of gym work and pool work which is good for his fitness. He is always on the side of the pitch watching on which the manager wants.

“If he changes his tactics or certain things Ledley is right involved and knows what is happening if called up.”

England, who begin their campaign against the United States on Saturday, are 7/2 with Skybet not to concede a goal in the group stage.
