Jermain Defoe has admitted England struggled to cope with the high altitude during another unimpressive friendly display.
England beat South African club side Platinum Stars 3-0 thanks to goals from Defoe, Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney on Monday afternoon, but it was not a convincing performance from Fabio Capello’s men.
However, Defoe insisted the conditions had played a major role in the lacklustre outing.
He told ESPN: “It was quite difficult to breathe out there to be honest. We are higher up than when in Austria for the training camp so altitude is going to play a major part.
“It felt a lot harder in terms of breathing and getting your recovery. It was quite difficult to get your breath back, but we will get used to that and we feel prepared for Saturday.
“Mentally we’re prepared, physically we are prepared. Everyone is looking forward to the game (against the United States).”
Tottenham frontman Defoe is 7/1 with StanJames to open the scoring against the United States. Rooney is 7/2 , Peter Crouch is 6/1 and both Emile Heskey and Frank Lampard are 8/1. For the US, you can get 12/1 on former Hull loanee Jozy Altidore, 14/1 (Bet365) on Landon Donovan and 16/1 on Edson Buddle (Bet365).
