FIFA rubbish reports of swearing edict following Wayne Rooney's referee rant

World Cup Staff - 10 Jun 2010

FIFA have rubbished reports that World Cup referees have been told to brush up on English swear words in an effort to curb dissent.

The suggestions came this week after England striker Wayne Rooney was booked for an outburst at referee Jeff Selogilwe during the 3-0 friendly win over Platinum Stars.

Selogilwe warned Rooney that a similar outburst at the World Cup would get him sent off, but FIFA deny that have issued an edict to match officials in order to target England players.

A spokesperson said: “No such list has been distributed to the referees.”
