Frank Lampard urges England to keep World Cup focus following Rio injury

Frank Lampard has urged his England team-mates not to lose focus following the injury to Rio Ferdinand.

The Manchester United defender sustained a knee injury during the team’s very first training session in Rustenburg, ruling Ferdinand out of the World Cup.

Lampard admitted the incident made him “feel a bit sick in the stomach”, but  insists the team must not dwell on the loss.

“We have to keep batting on, we have to be focused,” The Chelsea man said.

“Yes, we’ve lost a big player and big leader in our team but we’ve got to get together.”

Lampard also gave his support to replacement captain Steven Gerrard.

“I think he will do the job he does at Liverpool, which he has done fantastically for years. It’ll mean everything to him, the England captaincy.

“Steven’s got that very quiet way about him off the pitch and everyone respects him for that.

“He’s a player to look up to and that’s what a captain is all about.”

England are currently 8/1 with extrabet, Victor Chandler and William Hill to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy this summer.
