Germany 4 England 1 - Steven Gerrard hopes Fabio Capello remains England boss

World Cup Staff - 27 Jun 2010

England captain Steven Gerrard hopes coach Fabio Capello will stay on despite a disastrous World Cup campaign.

The Three Lions arrived in South Africa on a high following a promising qualifying campaign, but poor performances in the draws against the United States and Algeria set alarm bells ringing.

A 1-0 win over Slovenia brought renewed hope, but England were trounced 4-1 by bitter rivals Germany in the last 16, raising questions about the future of Capello.

The Italian has come under fire for his tactics during the tournament, which included the failed Wayne Rooney/Emile Heskey partnership up front and Gerrard lining up on the left-hand side.

But Liverpool star Gerrard insists Capello is the man to lead England in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012.

“I’m sure tonight or in the morning he’ll watch the game and he’ll speak to us when he’s got more time,” the midfielder said.

“He was only in the dressing room very briefly but you can see on his face he’s hurting like the rest of us.

“Personally, I’d like him to stay because I think he’s a fantastic manager.”

SkyBet are offering odds of 4/7 that Capello will still be in the role at the end of this summer’s tournament on July 11, and 5/4 that he moves on.
