John Terry will continue to be a leader despite losing England captaincy

World Cup Staff - 9 Jun 2010

Former England captain John Terry insists he will continue to lead on the pitch despite being stripped of the armband.

Terry was removed from the role by coach Fabio Capello after allegations the defender had an affair with former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge’s ex-partner.

Following the injury to his successor Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard was named skipper for the World Cup with Frank Lampard his vice-captain.

But Terry still plans on having his say.

“I haven’t found it difficult not being captain,” he insisted.

“When I met the manager I stressed to him I accepted the decision, but he would continue to get exactly the same character.

“I’m not going to allow my head to go down and beat myself up about it. I will just continue to be the same person.

“I will still give my opinion and make my presence felt, both in the dressing room or on the field.

“Like every other player, I am here to win the World Cup and will do everything possible, even if it is an opinion away from football.”

Paddy Power make Terry the 13/2 favourite to be the first England player booked and the 15/2 favourite to be the first to see the red card.
