Matt Le Tissier backs Frank Lampard for penalty duty at World Cup

World Cup Staff - 3 Jun 2010

Former Southampton and England star Matt Le Tissier believes Frank Lampard should continue taking penalties despite his recent failures.

Normally reliable from the spot, Lampard has had back-to-back misses in the FA Cup final and England’s friendly with Japan on Sunday.

That has made the Chelsea star a 4/1 favourite with Boylesports to be the man to eliminate England from the World Cup with a missed spot-kick.

But Le Tissier, who converted 48 of 49 penalties in his career, told the Daily Mail: “If he backs himself then you’ve got to take that on board. Half the battle is if the player wants to be there.

“Obviously if he misses five in a row then you might have to take the decision out of his hands but if he is still confident then let him have them.”
