Steven Gerrard admits to mixed emotions over England World Cup captaincy

World Cup Staff - 6 Jun 2010

Steven Gerrard admitted to “mixed emotions” when he was handed the England captaincy by Fabio Capello.

The Italian turned to Liverpool captain Gerrard, 30, after regular skipper Rio Ferdinand suffered a knee injury in training that has ruled him out of the World Cup.

And in a video conference with FA chairman Prince William, Gerrard said: “We’re very disappointed about Rio but by the time that first game comes around I’m sure the team will be fit and ready to win.

“We are really excited. We have been given a super training camp at which to prepare. The guys are working hard to make sure they are fit and ready.

“It’s fantastic for me to be able to lead the country in the World Cup. But obviously I’d rather that Rio was here fit and available so it’s mixed emotions at the minute.”

BetFred have opened up a special cashback offer involving England.

If you back Fabio Capello’s men to win the World Cup between 1st June and 12th June (19:30 BST), BetFred will refund your stake as a free bet if England lose in the final.
