France coach Raymond Domenech remains optimistic that William Gallas will be fit for the World Cup.

Gallas missed the end of Arsenal’s season with a calf problem but was still named by Domenech in his provisional squad.

The 32-year-old is unlikely to face Costa Rica in a World Cup warm-up match on Wednesday, but Domenech believes Gallas will be fit for the World Cup opener against Uruguay.

He said: “We can be optimistic from what we have seen in training, but that is not the same as a game.

“We do not know if he will be okay for Costa Rica.

“It does not hurt now, but we must be careful with the calf. We want it to be ready for the World Cup.”

Fellow defender Gael Clichy is also confident that Gunners team-mate Gallas will be ready.

“William is our main man at the back and we need him,” he said.

“I have no doubt he will play at the World Cup. He has hiked up with us in the snow and has been training with no problems.

“I know him well, he’s strong, he won’t give up and will make the trip with us.”

France can be backed to win the World Cup at 20/1 with SkyBet, Betfred, Ladbrokes and Coral.
