Franz Beckenbauer is revelling in Germany’s 4-1 demolition of England in the last 16 of the World Cup.
‘Der Kaiser’ had been less then complimentary about the Three Lions in recent weeks but instead of silencing the Germany legend, England produced a limp display in Bloemfontein as they crashed out thanks to Thomas Muller’s brace and goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski.
And Beckenbauer said: “England were overwhelmed – they just could not come to terms with our style of play.
“We have taken England apart. We were simply better in every aspect.”
Klose and Podolski put Germany two up before Matthew Upson pulled one back, and England should have been level when Frank Lampard’s shot hit the crossbar and went over the line, but the officials did not give it.
Muller’s double in the second half then wrapped up the victory, and Beckenbauer, part of the 1966 World Cup squad on the receiving end of Sir Geoff Hurst’s questionable goal, was pleased Germany had added to the scoring to lessen the significance of Lampard’s ‘goal’.
“The linesman really has to see that goal which was not given,” he admitted. “It was a clear goal.
“Fortunately, we added two more, otherwise there would be a lot more discussion about it.”
Germany now face Argentina in the quarter-finals and are 13/10 with bet365 to qualify, with Diego Maradona’s men 4/6 (Paddy Power, William Hill).
