Germany coach Joachim Loew urges Mesut Oezil to keep feet on the ground

World Cup Staff - 15 Jun 2010

Joachim Loew has urged Germany starlet Mesut Oezil not to get carried away following his dazzling display at the weekend.

Oezil played a starring role in the 4-0 rout of Australia, and is already being touted as Germany’s newest sporting hero by the national press.

But coach Loew insists the 21-year-old midfielder has a long way to go before deserving such an accolade.

“To be a world-class player requires a lot of development and the need to be consistent over several years,” Loew said.

“But Mesut, no doubt, has what it takes.”

And the Germany boss was full of praise for Oezil’s performance on Sunday night in Durban, where the Werder Bremen signalled his arrival on the world stage in considerable style.

“He is a player that fits perfectly with my ideas,” Loew continued.

“He plays a very high level, he can win the ball easily and then produce a telling shot. He is a playmaker and can produce some passes with split defences.”

There was also praise from striker Miroslav Klose, who answered his critics with a goal against Australia.

“We have always sought and out-and-out number 10 and now we have one,” he added.

“Mesut has made the position his own for Germany. He is an absolute bonus for us.”

Oezil is 10/1 with StanJames to open the scoring when Germany return to action against Serbia on Friday.
