Germany defender Heiko Westermann out of World Cup

World Cup Staff - 31 May 2010

Germany have been dealt another major injury blow with the news that Heiko Westermann will miss the World Cup.

Schalke 04 defender Westermann, 26, fractured a bone in his left foot during the 3-0 friendly win over Hungary at the weekend, adding him to a long list of German casualties.

He joins Michael Ballack (ankle), Rene Adler (rib), Christian Traesch (ankle) and Simon Rolfes (knee) on the sidelines.

Coach Joachim Loew said: “Heiko would have played an important role in our team because of his versatility.

“He had been outstanding in training.”

A distraught Westermann added: “Of course, I am totally crushed because it was a huge goal to play at the World Cup.”

Germany are 16/1 with Ladbrokes to once again lift the Jules Rimet Trophy.
