Legend Franz Beckenbauer down on Germany's World Cup chances

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer is pessimistic about the current team’s chances of winning the World Cup.

Coach Joachim Loew’s preparations have received a hammer blow with several players - Rene Adler, Heiko Westermann, Simon Rolfes, Christian Traesch and captain Michael Ballack - ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

And Beckenbauer, winner of the World Cup as both a player and a manager, told Berlin-based newspaper Der Tagesspiegel: “Without Michael Ballack it will be difficult. Our team is weakened.

“We’ll have to work hard just to reach the semi-finals.”
