Felipe Melo’s own goal and the first headed strike of Wesley Sneijder’s career saw the Dutch come from behind to edge past the Brazilians and into the semi-finals, where they will face Uruguay.

The South Americans are 10/1 for overall glory having beaten Ghana 4-2 on penalties after the two sides finished level on 1-1 following extra-time.

Van Marwijk said: “I said to the Dutch Football Association two years ago that I was not going to this tournament just to take part in it.

“I’m a sportsman and if I go somewhere, I want to win. People might think that’s arrogant, but we have proven we can beat Brazil, one of the best teams in the world.

“If that’s a fact, we should dare to say this, we should go for it.

“But I will make it very clear to my team; we have still got two matches to play and the next match is the most important. We will have to really concentrate on that.”

Holland will continue their mission in Cape Town on Tuesday evening, but will do so without Gregory van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong, who both picked up their second yellow cards of the tournament at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
