Portugal are ranked by FIFA as the third best team in the world, but they are 28/1 (Bet365) outsiders to win the World Cup, and their recent performances suggest they may struggle in South Africa.

They drew recently with Cape Verde, and face a similar opponent this evening in the shape of Mozambique, but there shouldn’t be any repeat problems, especially given that this is the players’ final chance to impress head coach Carlos Quiroz ahead of the World Cup.

Bwin offer a best price of 2/13 that Portugal win tonight, and it is even money that they do so by three or more goals.

Neither of those two options make much appeal, but one that does is the 4/7 (PaddyPower) that the home side win without conceding a goal.

Portugal have let in just one goal in their last six matches and, surprisingly for a team with so much attacking talent, they are a very defensive minded side.

If they fail to concede, then covering correct scores could be a useful way to ensure a profit. It is unlikely that the Portuguese will score more than four, so possibly taking two-nil (11/2, BetFred) and three-nil (6/1, BetFred) wins for the Europeans, which seem to the bookmakers’ picks of final scores, is the best option.

If you fancy a shock, it is 25/1 (SportingBet) that Mozambique emulate Cape Verde and keep the game goal-less, and the same price that the Africans win.

Recommendation

Correct Score – Portugal 2 Mozambique 0 (11/2, BetFred)
Correct Score – Portugal 3 Mozambique 0 (6/1, BetFred)
