Two years ago, Vicente del Bosque’s side matched the exploits of the 1964 team by taking the European Championship trophy back to Spain.
And Hierro believes that success has paved the way for more glory on football’s biggest stage ahead of their South Africa 2010 semi-final clash with Germany in Durban.
Hierro said: “What has changed is the mentality. After 44 years, Spain are now the European champions. This is showing now in this tournament with the team reaching the semi-final.
“The team now has momentum, but what the win in 2008 has done is give the team more confidence and they have matured as well.”
Spain are 13/8 with Blue Square to beat Germany in 90 minutes and 17/20 to reach the final, while Hierro is also the latest big name to tip Fernando Torres for a return to top form.
“Fernando is a very important player in the Spanish team,” added Hierro. “He came into the team after being out injured for five weeks. I think he is showing slowly, game after game, that he is improving.
“There is no doubt he brings great quality to the team in attack and I hope he will improve even more.”
Torres can be backed at 2/1 with Blue Square to finally break his goalscoring duck for the tournament against Germany and he is 10/3 to net Spain’s first strike.
