Fernando Torres remains a major doubt for Spain’s opening World Cup clash with Switzerland on June 16.
Liverpool striker Torres ended his Premier League campaign early by undergoing a second operation on his right knee in April in a bid to be fit for the European Champions’ challenge to become the best in the world.
The 26-year-old was named in Vicente del Bosque’s 30-man provisional squad on Tuesday, but it looks as though he may be running out of time to be ready to tackle the Swiss.
Spain team doctor Juan Jose Garcia Cota admitted to FIFA.com: “Right now, we cannot say whether Fernando will be ready in time for the first match.
“He has started to work outside and is still doing gym work to improve the muscle tone around the knee.
“It takes a long time but the process we are following is still very good. We cannot say for sure but we are optimistic.
“There are still so many days and the injury evolves day to day.”
