Everton striker Victor Anichebe was one of seven players cut as Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback named his 23-man World Cup squad.

Anichebe was overlooked along with Peter Utaka, Onyekachi Apam, Brown Ideye and domestically-based duo Bassey Akpan and Terna Suswan.

However, there were places for Anichebe’s Toffees team-mates Joseph Yobo and Aiyegbeni Yakubu.

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was handed a call-up despite missing the end of the Premier League campaign, and FA Cup final, with a knee injury.

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba, Austin Ejide.

Defenders: Taye Taiwo, Elderson Echiejile, Chidi Odiah, Joseph Yobo, Ayodele Adeleye, Rabiu Afolabi, Danny Shittu.

Midfielders: Kalu Uche, Dickson Etuhu, John Mikel Obi, Sani Kaita, Haruna Lukman, Yusuf Ayila.

Forwards: Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu, Obafemi Martins, John Utaka, Victor Obinna Nsofor, Osaze Odemwingie, Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi.
