Oscar Tabarez’s side were 100/1 outsiders with Blue Square to lift the trophy before the tournament began and, although falling just short of making the final, they remain determined to prove their worth.

Suarez, the striker who has emerged as the most controversial figure of South Africa 2010 after his last-minute hand-ball against Ghana prevented the Black Stars from going through to the semis, insists Uruguay will take enormous pride from coming third.

Suarez said: “For this squad, the World Cup is not over yet.Now what’s left is to play to the death for third place.”

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez echoed his striker’s call saying: “Yes, third and fourth position is not the same as the top two, but we will go in with the same commitment and enthusiasm as we did against Holland.

“The challenge for Uruguay is to finish third in the World Cup. I know Germany and they will make it very difficult for us, so we must fight hard to win.”

Uruguay can be backed at 10/3 to beat Germany in 90 minutes and are available at 2/1 to finish in the bronze medal position.
