The South Americans finally saw their hopes of a surprise South Africa 2010 triumph end at the semi-final stage but Tabarez issued a rallying call following the brave 3-2 loss to Holland.

He said: “We were one of the four semi-finalists and the other three are powerhouses in Europe.

“We know where football in Uruguay stands on a worldwide level, so I am proud and happy with the performance of the team. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

On the third-place game, he added: “We have to bury this result. We have to get rid of our sorrow over this match.

“We must give a good account of ourselves. It’ll be another advertisement for football in Uruguay. We may have limitations as a team, but we play with pride.”
