Vote probe harming England World Cup bid, says team member

England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has been “harmed” by the newspaper probe into the bidding process, a member of the campaign team has told BBC Sport.

The Sunday Times newspaper recently claimed two members of the voting team – Amos Adamu of Nigeria and Reynald Temarii of Tahiti – had been willing to sell their votes for cash, with both men denying any wrongdoing.

FIFA’s ethics committee is due to meet later this month to discuss the matter, and now sources close to England’s bid believe a proposed Panorama programme could do more harm to the chances of hosting the tournament for the first time since 1966.

A member of the bid team told BBC Sport: “It has significantly harmed England’s bid.

“The question is can we recover from this? FIFA members feel they are being persecuted by the British media.

“It isn’t dead and the next two or three weeks will be delicate but England’s bid has been damaged and it’s going to take a lot of hard work to repair that damage.”
