FIFA will next week launch tests into 10 companies’ goal-line technology systems which if successful should lead to the principle being adopted at a meeting of the game’s law-makers in March

The Zurich-based research institution EMPA will carry out the tests between February 7-13th, FIFA have announced.

Each system will have to demonstrate they meet the criteria of being 100% accurate, and can relay the decision automatically to referees within a second.

The results will then be announced at the meeting of the International FA Board meeting at Celtic Manor, near Newport, on March 5th.

It is expected that if some of the systems do prove they meet the criteria then FIFA will consent to the principle of goal-line technology being approved, with the next step being an experimental phase in selected competitions.

The tests will take place behind closed doors at FIFA’s headquarters and at least one British company will be taking part. It is not clear whether that is Hawk-Eye, the firm that operates systems in cricket and tennis, as the company have refused to confirm whether they are part of the testing programme.

Companies that are expected to take part include Adidas/Cairos, whose microchip inside a ball system has been tested by FIFA before, plus Swiss watch firms Longines and Tag Heuer.

The IFAB meeting will also hear results of the ongoing experiments of having an extra assistant referee behind each goal-line which UEFA are using in the Champions League and Europa League. UEFA will also apply for permission to use the system in the Euro 2012 finals.

UEFA president Michel Platini will be one who speaks out against goal-line technology at the IFAB meeting in March. He said last month: "With additional referees you don’t need goal-line technology."

Click here for World Cup News

FIFA should keep 2022 Qatar World Cup in summer says Thompson

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/FIFA-should-keep-2022-Qatar-World-Cup-in-summer-says-Thompson-201101200003/

England's FIFA executive committee member Geoff Thompson says Qatar should honour its commitment to play the 2022 World Cup in the summer

Thompson said unless there is clear medical evidence which proves players are at risk, the tournament should go ahead as plans rather than being brought forward by several months.

His comments come after Qatar's FIFA vice-president Mohamed bin Hammam last week rejected calls to move the tournament forward to January 2022, insisting that the country could cope with staging the event in June and July as planned.

"This should be a proper discussion and it is disappointing to me that people are talking about moving the tournament when Qatar bid to stage it at a certain time," Thompson told BBC Sport.

"It was never discussed at any [executive committee] meeting. At the end of the day, people are bidding for the World Cup at the appropriate time. The bidding document is clear about when it should be.

"We may believe that there is a risk but until we are presented with a medical report which shows clearly that people's health is at risk, until we get something concrete, then we shouldn't move it."

Last week, Asian Football Confederation president Bin Hammam had said he was "unimpressed" by recent comments from FIFA president Sepp Blatter as well as UEFA president Michel Platini, with the former looking to bring the tournament forward and the latter claiming Qatar should share the tournament with neighbouring Gulf states.

"I believe Qatar can stand alone and organise the competition by itself," said Bin Hammam. "I'm really not very impressed by these opinions to distribute the game over the Gulf or change the time from July to January.

"It's actually premature, it's people's opinions and they're just discussing it on no basis or no ground.

"We are very happy and we are promising the world that we are going to organise an amazing World Cup in June and July."

Click here for World Cup News

FIFA duo appeal against suspensions following corruption allegations

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/FIFA-duo-appeal-against-suspensions-following-corruption-allegations-201101170001/

FIFA executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have formally appealed against the suspensions imposed on them following allegations of corruption

Nigeria's Adamu was given a three year ban by football's governing body after he was caught looking to take bribes from British undercover reporters.

Temarii of Tahiti was cleared of corruption but received a one-year ban for breaching confidentiality rules.

FIFA Independent Appeals Committee will hear their cases.

Temarii last week claimed to have received a letter from FIFA last month in which he was "cleared [of] all corruption allegations".

"The ethics committee have accused me of breaching Fifa confidentiality and loyalty, with which I totally disagree," he said.

"I hope a meeting, possibly next month, will see Fifa's appeals committee realise I have not breached any articles within the code of ethics, nor did have the intention to."

Adamu hopes to be exonerated within weeks, clearing him to stand for re-election ahead of the Confederation for African Football (CAF) annual assembly on February 23rd in Sudan, where two of its four delegates will be put forward to FIFA's 24-man committee.

Click here for World Cup News

Resignation from FIFA commission over corruption allegations

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/Resignation-from-FIFA-commission-over-corruption-allegations-201101100003/

German lawyer Guenter Hirsch has resigned from FIFA's ethics commission after claiming the football's governing body had "no real interest" in tackling allegations of corruption

Mr Hirsch's decision to quit comes just weeks after Russia and Qatar were awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively in controversial circumstances following allegations of corruption before and during the election.

In a letter to ethics commission president Claudio Sulser, he said: "The events of the past few weeks have raised and strengthened the impression that responsible persons in FIFA have no real interest in playing an active role in resolving, punishing and avoiding violations against ethic regulations of FIFA."

FIFA have questioned Hirsch's attendance record at ethics committee meetings and responded by issuing a statement which read: "As an independent judicial body, the [ethics] committee has decision-making power and the option to establish any sanctions they deem appropriate.

"Notably, the ethics committee had the mandate to overlook the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and to ensure that the rules of conduct and the Code of Ethics were adhered to during this process."

The statement added: "Hirsch was a member of the ethics committee since the creation of this committee and attended the inaugural meeting in October 2006.

"Since then, Hirsch has not attended any other meetings of the committee, despite being invited to attend every meeting held in the past four years."

Click here for World Cup News

FIFA say Qatar World Cup could be played in January

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/FIFA-say-Qatar-World-Cup-could-be-played-in-January-201101070003/

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has admitted that the Qatar World Cup in 2022 could be played in January

Speaking in Qatar ahead of the Asian Cup which starts on Friday, the FIFA president revealed: "I expect it will be held in the winter.

"We have time to look at this question, it is still 11 years away but we must decide the most adequate period for a successful world cup which means January or the end of the year."

The move would mean a number of clubs throughout Europe and elsewhere would be potentially without a number of players for what is a busy time in many domestic leagues and competitions.

Click here for World Cup News

FIFA need to make changes following World Cup vote says AFC president

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/FIFA-need-to-make-changes-following-World-Cup-vote-says-AFC-president-201101050002/

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Bin Hammam believes changes need to be made within FIFA

Bin Hammam is unhappy with FIFA president Sepp Blatter who earlier this week announced plans to introduce an anti-corruption committee following the controversy over the race to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Speaking on the eve of the AFC Congress in his native Qatar, who will host the 2022 World Cup, Bin Hammam told Reuters: "I am a member of the FIFA executive committee and we never discussed this idea (the anti-corruption committee) inside the executive committee -- I read about it in the media.

"I don't appreciate that we go to a meeting of FIFA and we find already that a committee has been formed, that members have been appointed and the code, or whatever has been decided."

"I think FIFA needs a lot of improvement."

Click here for World Cup News

FIFA president Blatter to set up anti-corruption committee

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/World-Cup-News/FIFA-president-Blatter-to-set-up-anti-corruption-committee-201101040004/

FIFA president Sepp Blatter wants to set up an anti-corruption committee following the World Cup voting allegations that marred the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids

Last year, two of FIFA's 24-man executive committee, Reynald Temarii and Amos Adamu, were suspended after allegations they had offered to sell their votes in the contest to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to undercover reporters.

Mr Temarii and Mr Adamu both missed last December's vote, which saw Russia and Qatar win the bid to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments respectively.

Blatter told Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung: "I will take care of it personally, to make sure that there is no corruption at FIFA.

"This committee will strengthen our credibility and give us a new image in terms of transparency."

He added: "The committee must be independent to guarantee maximum credibility.

"I want to present this committee to the FIFA Congress here in Zurich at the start of June."

Blatter, who stands for re-election next June, insists he has not considered resigning as a result of the allegations.

"Not for a single moment have I thought, I must now go," he said. "I'm staying for longer.

"But I need a lot of strength, to endure the fierce criticism against me."

Click here for World Cup News

Manchester United v Stoke Ticket Competition - win free tickets

http://www.world-cup-news.com/category/All-News/Manchester-United-v-Stoke-Ticket-Competition--win-free-tickets-201012190020/

We have teamed up with Betfair and have two pairs of tickets available for the match on Tuesday 4th January

We are delighted to offer you the exclusive chance to attend Old Trafford on Tuesday 4th January to see Manchester United v Stoke, courtesy of Betfair who are the official betting partner of the Red Devils.

We have two pairs of tickets up for grabs and for your chance to be a winner, simply click on this link and sign up for an account at Betfair.
England received just two votes to crash out in the first round of voting, and bid chief Andy Anson later claimed some members of FIFA’s executive committee had gone back on promises to vote for the English bid.

But Blatter has been surprised by the response in England, accusing the country of sour grapes.

He told Weltwoche: “To be honest, I was surprised by all the English complaining after the defeat. England, of all people, the motherland of fairplay ideas.

“Now some of them are showing themselves to be bad losers. You can’t come afterwards and say so and so promised to vote for England. The results are known. The outcome came out clearly.”

“I really sense in some reactions a bit of the arrogance of the western world of Christian background. Some simply can’t bear it if others get a chance for a change.
